FAQ

Most enquiries reduce to a small set of recurring technical questions.

01 What is 316 stainless steel?

316 (1.4401 / SUS316) is an austenitic stainless steel containing 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel and 2-3% molybdenum. The molybdenum addition improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion.

02 When should 316 be specified over 304?

316 is preferred for marine, coastal, chemical processing, pharmaceutical and chloride-rich environments where 304 is not adequate.

03 Is 316 coil suitable for food contact?

Yes. 316 is widely used for food processing, brewing, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment. Hygienic surface finishes (2B, BA, No.4) are available.

04 What is the maximum service temperature of 316?

316 is suitable for intermittent service up to 870 °C and continuous service up to 925 °C. Sustained 425 - 860 °C exposure should be avoided to prevent carbide precipitation.

05 Can 316 coil be supplied with low-carbon grade (316L)?

Yes. 316L (1.4404 / SUS316L) with carbon ≤ 0.03% is available for welded applications requiring maximum intergranular corrosion resistance.
